The Golden Globes are regarded as being just second in significance to the Emmy Awards and the Academy Awards (Oscar) in the entertainment industry, and the televised awards ceremony is a similarly expensive affair.
The annual Golden Globe Award is given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to honor outstanding achievements in television and motion pictures during the past year.
The 80th Golden Globe Award 2023 event took place on January 10, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. It was broadcast live in the United States on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
80th Golden Globe Awards 2023: Controversy
Due to the lack of diversity in the organization that puts on the awards ceremony, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 80th Golden Globe Awards 2023 ceremony was marred by controversy and several A-list celebrities boycotted it.
According to preliminary data from broadcaster NBC, the Golden Globes television ratings fell to a record low of just 6.3 million viewers, down from 6.9 million in 2021 and from more than 18 million in 2020, even as the beleaguered award show struggled to recover from its recent controversies. It might make the future of the Globes even more ambiguous.
NBC, which broadcasts the Golden Globes Award, along with many of Hollywood’s big stars, led by Tom Cruise, who returned his three Globes, boycotted the event last year due to concern about the lack of diversity and alleged ethical failings of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
There is presently no television agreement in place for the event starting the next year. NBC canceled its long-standing multi-year Globes broadcast agreement and only consented to bring back this year’s show on a one-time basis.
While the attendance of so many celebrities indicates that many in Hollywood are pleased with the HFPA’s recent reforms, including the admission of Black members after a Los Angeles Times report revealed the organization had none, doubts remain.
Concerns about US billionaire Todd Boehly’s proposal to spin off the awards ceremony into a for-profit organization and pay members’ salaries have drawn further criticism.
Several notable winners, like Cate Blanchett, who won best actress for the drama motion picture “Tar,” did not attend the ceremony on Tuesday due to scheduling conflicts. And even Brendan Fraser is abstaining from the ceremony this year.
Brendan Fraser is abstaining from the ceremony this year, unlike Tom Cruise, who returned his three Golden Globe Awards the previous year. In 2018, the actor came forward with a sexual assault accusation against a former HFPA president.
The “Globes historically airs on Sunday nights,” when ratings are often higher, an NBC spokesman noted in an email to AFP. This year, the awards ceremony was shifted to a Tuesday night time slot to avoid competing with the hugely popular American football league.

History Of Golden Globe Award In Short
The Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA), a group of entertainment journalists based in Los Angeles but writing for publications outside of the United States, first attempted to present the Golden Globe Awards in 1944. It was an informal luncheon hosted by the HFCA on February 11, 1944, at the 20th Century Fox Studios.
It was renamed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in 1955 after a short-lived splinter group the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood (FPAH) was reincorporated.
In 1952, the HFCA established a unique award “for extraordinary achievement in the Motion Picture Industry” in honor of its first laureate, Cecil B. DeMille.
The Golden Globe Awards, which at first only recognized motion pictures, presented its first awards for television the following year. In the middle of the 1960s, national television broadcasts of the awards gala started.

Golden Globe Awards: Categories
The Golden Globes are awarded in several categories for each medium. The best motion picture, best actor, and best actress categories of the movie awards each have a “drama” and “comedy or musical” subcategory.
Additionally honored are supporting acting performances, directing, screenwriting, music, animated movies, and foreign-language movies. Television awards also include acting in each genre or layout as well as those for drama series, comedies, musicals, miniseries, and movies.
